As of today, the four active NHL players involved in the 2018 world junior championship scandal with Hockey Canada are still awaiting trial and their teams are waiting to find out what they need to do with them as well. NHL insider Frank Serravalli gave a brief update on the situation today. The four players involved are Dillon Dube from the Flames, Cal Foote and Michael McLeod from the Devils, and of course, Flyers netminder Carter Hart. Serravalli revealed today that the Flyers, Devils, and Flames are waiting for the NHL to give them guidance on the situation, and whether or not they need to submit qualifying offers to the players. Right now, the Flyers, Flames and Devils are in limbo. If pressed, they are all unlikely to issue qualifying offers to retain the rights of these players. However, the judicial process has not yet begun, and all four have proclaimed their innocence through barristers and are owed due process. All [three] teams are hoping that the NHL will step in and take the issue out of their hands, which could allow the teams to retain their rights without the need for qualifying offers pending the judicial process and, of course, any potential league discipline that might follow.

It is certainly an awkward situation for both the NHL and the teams involved. Carter Hart is without a doubt, the highest profile player involved. His departure was arguably the main reason the Flyers fell out of the playoffs this year. As such, the Flyers have a lot at stake with this trial, but it may come so late that it doesn't really matter. Still though, the team needs to know what to do with Hart in the meantime.

Devils forward Michael McLeod has never put up huge numbers in the NHL, but he is an analytical darling and was a key piece of the Devil's forward group this season before his arrest. Unlike the rest of the players though, McLeod is facing two charges in the case. As such, it seems particularly unlikely that he will ever play in the NHL again.

It may very well be quite some time before we get any closure on this story, but when it comes, the headlines will surely be big.
