The Nashville Predators went all in with some big stars on day one of free agency, and now an alternative plan of Ryan O'Reilly's has been revealed. Day one of NHL free agency was absolute chaos, and in amongst all of that, the Nashville Predators had an incredible day, landing the star trio of Jonathan Marchessault, Steven Stamkos and Brady Skjei. Things could have taken a different turn according to a new report however, as former Toronto Maple Leaf Ryan O'Reilly was pushing for the team to go all in and trade for his former teammate Mitch Marner. «Prior to the Predators spending a whack of dough on free agents (Steven) Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei, eq-Leaf Ryan O'Reilly did his very best to convince GM Barry Trotz to make a push and trade for Mitch Marner,» Kypreos said.

The Predators were the team most linked to Mitch Marner after rumours of a potential trade surfaced, but after handing out more than $15 million in free agency, that ship has well and truly sailed. It's not clear, and it may never be clear just how close O'Reilly got to convincing Barry Trotz and the organization to make the trade for Marner, but now he's got two more stars up front to help this team make a push for the Stanley Cup.
