Matvei Michkov attempts Michigan goal during first practice with John Tortorella

Philadelphia Flyers rookie forward Matvei Michkov made the highlight reel today after he attempted a Michigan goal in practice, drawing a reaction from head coach John Tortorella.

Footage of Michkov's move immediately began circulating around social media, with some posts going viral given Tortorella's known stance against fancy moves like this. With that being said, most fans have taken this in a lighthearted way, with many joking about it. While Tortorella is known for being a strict coach, even he probably won't be too upset that he attempted this move in a practice. After all, this is a learning experience for him. If he does it again in a game though... well he better hope he scores.

Flyers reporter Jon Baily noted that Tortorella certainly saw the move as he was keeping a close eye on the rookie during the entire practice. He even noted how he looked over to the rest of the coaching staff after the move and several of them were laughing. So it is certainly a light-hearted moment for now, but we've all seen how Tortorella can get when players continue to rub him the wrong way.

Michkov has been the highlight of the Flyers' rookie tournament so far alongside 2024 13th overall pick Jett Luchanko. The two forwards seem to have some natural chemistry which they showed on the ice, and it seems they have gotten along quite well so far, which is a good sign for Flyers fans as they both figure to be a big part of the team's future.

Michkov is expected to be among the favorites for the Calder trophy this season as rookie of the year, with many even having him as the favorite. Will he be able to thrive under Torts though? We will just have to watch the games for ourselves.
