Through 3 games Auston Matthews has not recorded a point and today he spoke about the frustration that comes along with his disappointing individual start. The Toronto Maple Leafs have gotten off to a good start this season with a pair of wins and only one loss. Under new head coach Craig Berube things seem to be clicking early. With the wins have also come struggles for Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews who uncharacteristically does not have a point in the 2024-25 season. After his recent individual struggles, Auston Matthews had the opportunity to speak to the media and address his lack of points. During the interview Auston Matthews did not seem too concerned about the slow start and pointed to the success of the team instead. Yeah, I mean, I think the chances are there, Matthews said Monday. I think it's just a matter of time. We were playing hockey, we were winning, so that's the most important part, and you know that those chances will eventually fall and get going from there. Auston Matthews is confident the goals will come soon. He believes that once he sees the puck go in the net it will open the floodgates and lead to a hot streak. Yeah, I think it's nice to get the first one to get going sometimes, but you take what you get and what the game gives you sometimes, and I think we just continue to play the right way, continue to generate chances. Like I said, it's going to go in eventually, and then that's going to get on a roll, Matthews said Even without the points, Auston Matthews has contributed to winning hockey. Matthews is in his first season as the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs which provides immense value. These games have also given other players an opportunity to step up which could be incredibly valuable in the long run.
Could Auston Matthews' slow start actually be helping the Toronto Maple Leafs?
With Auston Matthews struggling other people have had to step up to the plate and take on more offensive responsibility. So far this season the Toronto Maple Leafs have had to rely on other guys like Max Domi who leads the team in points. Guys further down the lineup including Steven Lorentz have stepped up and found their groove offensively.

With all of these players stepping up it is creating a culture of depth scoring that the Toronto Maple Leafs have not had in years. Of course, it is fun when Matthews is on a 70-goal pace and playing at an all-world level but the success of other players could be more important come playoff time for the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs will likely work all of this out soon. Auston Matthews will find his scoring touch and go back to dominating the league. Maple Leafs goaltender Joseph Woll will return from his injury and provide an upgrade there. Then the Maple Leafs will continue to get familiar with Craig Berube's style and continue translating it to wins.
