Today reports from Maple Leafs practice have confirmed that head coach Craig Berube shut down practice multiple times as he tried to teach his team a certain lesson.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a bit of an up-and-down start to the season. Their star players have not quite taken off the way many fans had hoped. The team is also not playing with the intensity and attention to detail that Craig Berube has been expecting. Today that led to an extra difficult and grueling practice for the Maple Leafs squad.

Despite being 3-1 on the season Craig Berube is not happy with his team's current effort and attention to detail. Today it was noticed at practice that Craig Berube stopped practice multiple times and seemed irate at his players for not doing drills correctly.

After practice, Craig Berube was asked about the purpose of stopping the drills. According to the Leafs bench boss he doesn't want his players to feel complacent and wants them staying as sharp as possible.

We don't want to get complacent, right? That's the biggest thing. Staying sharp, Berube explained. I stopped it a couple of times. Just execution for me, you know, being sharp and executing.

Craig Berube then referenced back to the last game where the Toronto Maple Leafs were up 5-0 against the Los Angeles Kings. Then they let up a little bit and the Los Angeles Kings scored a pair of goals.

The Maple Leafs would go on to win the game but with less of an explosion at the beginning of the game, things could've gotten ugly.

It sort of goes back to the last game and 5-0. You take your foot off the gas a little bit. That's where we got to get. We don't want to do that.

After practice, Nick Robertson was asked about today's practice and Craig Berube's decision to stop things. In the past, Nick Robertson has shown great frustration with the Maple Leafs' organization even requesting a trade at one point. However, under new head coach Craig Berube Nick Robertson seems to think that the accountability and the high expectations are exactly what the group has expected and been needing.

He keeps guys honest. He gets the best out of us, Nick Robertson said of Berube's coaching style. You don't want to be lax on days going to practice like that. You want a coach that's hard on you and expects better, and that's what brings the best out of us.

The results do end up speaking for themselves under Craig Berube the Toronto Maple Leafs are now 3-1. The Maple Leafs' only loss came after a historic performance from Samuel Montembeault. Other than that loss to Montembeault and the Canadiens Craig Berube is off to as good of a start as a head coach can be.

As the season continues we will have to see if he can continue it and if his motivational tactics will continue to work or eventually wear out with the players and become more frustrating than they are motivating.
