He was specifically asked about former teammate Mitch Marner. When speaking about Mitch Marner the Flames forward had nothing but praise and respect for his former teammate. He even went so far as to criticize Maple Leafs fans for their treatment of Mitch Marner and compared it to how Dion Phaneuf and Phil Kessel were treated before leaving and becoming successful elsewhere. It's a bit of touchy subject because the fans obviously have to pick somebody to get on and it's always going to be the guys making the most money. That's something I saw happen to Dion and Phil. They were always the scapegoats to anything that went wrong. I've known Mitch for a long time and I've watched him play for a long time. He's a guy I'd take on my team any day of the week. He's the heart and soul of that team and without Mitch I think things wouldn't be as good.

According to Nazem Kadri, Mitch Marner is the heart and soul of the Maple Leafs and an irreplaceable part of the team. If this is true, then letting Mitch Marner leave could be a grave mistake that leads to the end of the Maple Leafs' core as we know it. As the season goes on it will be interesting to see if the narrative on Mitch Marner changes or if he ends up being driven away.
