The Toronto Maple Leafs have made some bad free agent moves in recent years, but now it looks like Jani Hakanpaa's situation may top them all. In the summer of 2023, the Toronto Maple Leafs inked John Klingberg to a deal that they'd come to regret, and now, history may unfortunately be repeating itself. Ever since day one of free agency, there's been questions over Jani Hakanpaa and his potential future in the NHL, and in the latest update from Steve Simmons, things are clearly not looking good. What I was told about Hakanpaa was the belief that he would never play again in the NHL. I was told that his bone-on-bone knee was apparently shot. I was told from two sources that they didn't think that any team would sign him.

This raises further questions about their medical staff, the same one that cleared Klingberg before signing him, as he would ultimately end up on LTIR and play very little in the famed Maple Leafs uniform. According to Simmons' sources, the staff officially cleared Hakanpaa moving forward, with the team believing he will play a significant role at the NHL level. I asked the Leafs about the injury on Monday and was informed that he was cleared by the Toronto doctors. Only time will tell whether or not this is true, but if the team go into the 2024/25 campaign and end up placing him on LTIR, in year one of a two-year deal no less, it will raise many more questions about the team and their medical staff.
