This afternoon new comments from Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving addressed the play of struggling young star Nick Robertson.

Nick Robertson has been a controversial player for the Toronto Maple Leafs over the last several seasons.

Despite being a young player with a ton of talent, Nick Robertson has failed to break out repeatedly since making his NHL debut in the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs.

This season fans were hoping that Nick Robertson would get a fresh start with the hiring of head coach Craig Berube.

Despite being given some opportunities in the top six Nick Robertson has contributed mostly at the bottom of the lineup.

As a result of his lack of ice time, Nick Robertson has just one point on the season in 17 games for the Maple Leafs.

His lack of success has led to a ton of frustration from Toronto Maple Leafs fans.

This afternoon, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving discussed Nick Robertson's poor play and his future in Toronto.

Brad Treliving gives Nick Robertson major praise despite lack of points

In a new interview with the Toronto media, Brad Treliving was asked about Nick Robertson's game and lack of points so far this season.

In a surprising turn, Brad Treliving actually commended Nick Robertson for his effort and success away from the puck and defensively despite not having the points.

You can say he's struggling because there's (no) production - the puck hasn't gone in - but if his game was exactly the same as it was but a few more pucks had gone in, people would say Nick's playing well, said Treliving Nick has taken massive steps in his overall game - his checking game, his play away from the puck.

Brad Treliving continued when talking about Nick Robertson and confessed that while points are important having a fallback game is arguably more important for an everyday NHLer.

What we're talking to him about is, yeah, we want production, we want everybody to score, but make sure you've got a backup game so that if it's not going in for a period of time, what else are you bringing? said Treliving. You still got to contribute. I've been impressed. He works like a dog.

Despite Nick Robertson's offseason trade request and rocky start to the NHL season, it seems the team still has a lot of faith in him.

With these glowing comments for Nick Robertson from the Maple Leafs front office one has to wonder if he will see an uptick in his ice time again at some point this season.
