Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has been hard at work this offseason.

Leafs fans wanted a revamped blueline? They got it in the form of Stanley Cup champion Olover Ekman-Larsson from the Florida Panthers and Chris Tanev from the Dallas Stars in NHL free agency. Yet it's now been revealed, there was one target he missed.

The mystery man is Matt Roy. Toronto had their eyes on him ahead of free agency, but he ultimately signed a six-year, $34.5 million contract with the Washington Capitals. Toronto was in the race but price became too great.

I think Matt Roy was a little bit of the one that got away. They were interested in Brady Skjei but that was pretty clear early on that, that wasn't going to be it.
They called on Pesce, but I didn't get a sense that was ever [close]. Roy was a big target.

Roy is a reliable defensive defenseman and earned his money after his consistent few years with the Los Angeles Kings. The Leafs hunted a right-shot blueliner like him and managed to land Tanev. Yet they wanted Roy for depth and versatile on the middle and bottom pairings.

Model loves Matt Roy. Another great move by the Capitals.

It would've helped, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Jani Hakanpää, and his injury status.

Matt Roy will wear 3️⃣ with the Washington Capitals

But you can't win em all. What you could do if you're Treliving is recover and dip your toe in the water if you need to. There are diamonds in the rough like Tyson Barrie, itching for another NHL opportunity .
