Max Domi had a fantastic campaign in 2023/24 with the Maple Leafs, but his success alongside Auston Matthews means he must stay on the top line. The Toronto Maple Leafs had a solid off-season, making significant additions to their blue line and goaltending group, but in the forwards, the only notable move made was the re-signing of veteran Max Domi. This has caused many questions about the Maple Leafs forward group heading into the 2024/25 campaign, with speculation that Domi could return to the 3C role to give this team depth. While that would certainly accomplish that, one reporter has suggested that the combination built between Domi and Matthews is one that can't be ignored, revealing that if the team move No. 11 off that top line, it could be a waste of his talents.

In 2023/24, Domi had his most productive games alongside Matthews, tallying 11 points in 14 games in a single month on the top line, while posting the second most assists in the NHL in the same month, showing that their chemistry is fantastic. Unfortunately, this would mean that Mitch Marner is likely to move off the top line despite what he's done with Matthews in recent years, but it could be the best possible move for everyone involved. If that was the case, Marner would likely slide to the RW role on the second line alongside Bobby McMann and William Nylander, and if they got something going with John Tavares down the middle on the third line, it could be the deepest Leafs team we've seen in quite some time. These are all questions that new Head Coach Craig Berube will have to answer, but with Domi's success in 2023/24 on the top line, it's hard to ignore this call for him to return there, so we will wait and see how things shake out at training camp.
