NHL insider Frank Seravalli has just revealed that the Maple Leafs are one of the top teams that have the best chances of acquiring Jonathan Toews. Former Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews was all but retired after being away from the NHL for almost two years, but some recent comments from the 36-year-old have fired up speculation of a possible comeback. NHL Insider Frank Seravalli hasn't exactly doused those flames, naming the Toronto Maple Leafs a potential fit for Jonathan Toews. There's no shortage of teams whose interest was peaked over the holidays when Toews detailed his five-week healing journey in India, as he's been suffering from chronic inflammatory response disorder. And so he's feeling the best that he has in years and hinted in that story that he might want to resume his NHL career. I'm told multiple teams expressed interest in Toews potential return to his agent Pat Brisson from CAA Sports. They're not actually sure yet as to whether or not Toews might try to resume playing this year or if this is something that will wait until next year. I'm going to give you three teams to keep an eye on if Toews is to make a comeback bid. One of them is the Toronto Maple Leafs as a third line centre has been on Brad Treliving's wish list all season long. - Frank Seravalli

Frank Seravalli also named the Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche, two clubs with ties to Toews that could use some added forward depth. However, Toronto could be the best fit for the veteran. The Maple Leafs currently use Max Domi as their third-line center. When Auston Matthews does return and some roster moves have been made, Toews could fall into that role, bringing a ton of value in veteran experience and championship pedigree to a team with Stanley Cup aspirations. He put up 15 goals and 31 points in 53 games for Chicago during his last season with the team two years ago.

He is no longer the dominant player who helped lead the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups in five years, but he can still provide contributions at the NHL level. If he would consider signing a one-year, veteran-minimum deal, it would be a great move by Toronto in trying to solidify a lineup that needs a deep playoff run. The question of what comes next might take a while for fans and teams, though.
