The latest reports have revealed that Marc Savard, one of the Leafs coaches, could already be on the verge of losing his job after the team's slow start this year.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have gotten off to a somewhat underwhelming start to this season, having managed a record of 6-5-1 through the first 12 games of the regular season, just barely over a .500 win percentage. The Leafs rank third in the Atlantic Division but sit just one single point behind the second-place Florida Panthers. The current standings don't totally tell the story of how much they have been struggling up to date with the high expectations from their fans, media, and organization.

One glaring problem that has faced the Leafs this season must be their powerplay, which is an in-game element that has underperformed massively. Even with the talent up front, that powerplay has converted a meager three out of 38 opportunities thus far and plants them dead last in the NHL with a lowly 7.8% success rate. The ineptness has just continued to frustrate fans who had hopes of a much stronger start.

The Maple Leafs' issues on the powerplay have put a bright spotlight on assistant coach Marc Savard, who was brought in over the summer to revitalize this critical aspect of their game. The Leafs' powerplay issues were full frontal on display last night against the St. Louis Blues. Oliver Ekman-Larsson's predictable zone entry strategy at 5-on-4 really brought down the house, but it put a finer point on a larger issue with this team's lack of creativity and urgency as the wave of criticism came in online. Fans took to social media, airing their grievances over the stale play style and questioning Savard's approach.

It is not only the lagging Toronto powerplay that affects them; the Leafs have been undisciplined, taking a slew of unnecessary penalties that negate any man-advantages they may get. The fact that the powerplay can't sustain pressure and bury opportunities when presented rests on the somewhat dampening of overall victory chances against teams in close games. It's hard for such a team to realize its full potential and meet the demands placed on them.

If Marc Savard can't find a way to reignite the Leafs' powerplay, his time in Toronto could be short-lived. On paper, the Leafs possess the talent to succeed, but their special teams have been one of the biggest disappointments. Patience from the team and the fans will wear thin, waiting to see if Savard can right the ship before aspirations of playoff time in Toronto begin to slip away.
