Rutger McGroarty's situation in Winnipeg captured the attention of fans all off-season long, and now a former NHL Head Coach has called him out in a huge rant. After months of speculation, Rutger McGroarty's time in Winnipeg has officially come to an end, as the Pittsburgh Penguins acquired him in exchange for 2023 first-round pick Brayden Yager, with the Jets finally moving on from a headache that has plagued them all summer long.

Unsurprisingly, many are upset with the way McGroarty handled the situation, as it looks very bad from the outside looking in that a young player yet to make his NHL debut would make demands of his franchise. One person in particular that is upset is former Head Coach Bruce Boudreau, who laid into McGroarty in a massive rant following the trade. It drives me nuts, you want to go out there and punch him in the head to be honest, because listen how can we like I mean you went through it, I went through it, all the older guys have gone through it, you got to come and make the team, you can't be given the spot right away, he said. I was reading that about McGroarty today that they wouldn't guarantee, Winipeg wouldn't guarantee him a spot at the start of the season and that's one of the reasons he wanted to get traded, it's it just drives me crazy, I just think you have to earn your earn your spot...You have to go in there and earn a spot rather than come in and have the spot already there. While the beloved Boudreau is known for being hard-nosed, which doesn't always rub people the right way, his sentiments have been echoed by many in the past few days, with McGroarty labelled as a 'red flag' by many around the league this summer. Ultimately though, if he performs on the ice in Pittsburgh, his antics in 2024 will largely be forgotten, but if not, he'll have to face plenty of backlash.
