Don Cherry recently spoke about Corey Perry and the Edmonton Oilers, and the 91-year-old legendary broadcaster had very raw and honest opinions to share.

At 91 years young, Don Cherry is still heaping praise on Edmonton Oilers veteran Corey Perry. Cherry is one of Canada's most iconic commentators and was once voted the seventh greatest Canadian of all time.

Don Cherry believes Corey Perry should be in the HHOF

The long-time colorful commentator made the bold statement in the latest episode of his Grapevine podcast that Perry deserves to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Cherry started off by running down Perry's career accomplishments.

«Corey Perry won a Memorial Cup, a World Junior gold medal, two Olympic gold medals, a Stanley Cup, a Hart Trophy, Rocket Richard Trophy, played over 1,300 games, has over 430 goals, has over 920 points, over 1,400 minutes in penalties, which is pretty good, over 85 fights.»

But his son Tim, who hosts the show, countered that perhaps Perry doesn't fit the mold of players the Hall of Fame committee traditionally selects.

Cherry put Perry in the same class as Dale Hunter, a notoriously nasty and competitive forward from the 1980s and 1990s who recorded 1,020 points in 1,407 NHL games. But unlike Perry, Hunter never starred for Team Canada.

Meanwhile, Perry has 925 points in 1,365 regular-season games, including 441 goals. But most impressively, he has an incredible winning pedigree, and he hoisted the Stanley Cup with Anaheim and reached the Final five times with five different teams.

Even at 39, Perry remains effective. During the 2024-25 season, he ranks 41st among 601 NHL players (with at least 300 minutes at 5-on-5) in goal scoring at even strength, averaging 1.09 goals per 60 minutes.

Among Oilers players, only Leon Draisaitl ranks higher, sitting 26th overall with 1.17 goals per 60.
