Today a new reporter has urged the Winnipeg Jets to trade one of their youngest and most promising defensemen for players that can make an impact now. Earlier this week Jason Bukala of Sportsnet revealed that he believes the Winnipeg Jets need to make a major splash at the NHL Trade Deadline. At the time, Bukala suggested that the Jets should trade future assets such as draft picks to bring in as much NHL-ready talent as possible. Today a report from Jacob Stoller of Sportsnet has doubled down on his colleague's take and suggested that the Jets should trade former top prospect Ville Heinola.
Reporter Urges The Winnipeg Jets To Trade Ville Heinola In A Win Now Move
In his latest column, Stoller spoke about the idea of trading away Ville Heinola to bring in a big haul of current talent to try and load up for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Heinola was seen as a top young player in the Winnipeg Jets organization after making his debut at 18 years old. However, since then Heinola has struggled to carve out a bigger role with the Jets playing just 16 NHL games this season and tallying only one point. Compound Heinola's struggles with the fact that Dylan Samberg is having a breakout year and is one of head coach Scott Arniel's favorites and Heinola becomes a lot more expendable. It's been a tough two years for him. I'm probably Samberg's biggest fan here. I wanna see him, Arniel said Stoller goes on to point out that Heinola has been a healthy scratch for essentially every game since Samberg returned and doesn't seem to have a likely path back into the lineup. Since Samberg returned on Jan. 10, Heinola, who has recorded just one point in 16 games this year, has been a healthy scratch in all but two of the team's last 13 games. If the Jets have given up on Heinola's long-term development then a trade is likely the best option for all those involved. At just 23 years old Heinola likely still holds an incredible amount of trade value and could land the Jets a truly impactful player if packaged along with other assets. While the Jets aren't expected to make any massive deadline deals trading off Heinola for a quality player is one the team absolutely needs to consider going forward.
