Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals was playing a game at a hockey tournament in Russia when he suffered a terrible injury and had to exit.

The best Russian players in the world competed in a hockey game in what was dubbed as the "Match of the Year", which featured players from the NHL versus players from the KHL. Unfortunately for Ovechkin, he suffered a horrible knee injury and had to leave the game before it ended.

If there's a sliver of good news in all this, it's that it appears this injury isn't serious enough to affect Ovechkin's return to the Washington Capitals come training camp. It appears he will have to stop all physical activity for up to 10 days. This definitely put a scare in all the fans and coaches though.

"This injury is not too serious and did not prevent Ovechkin from playing in the Game of the Year a week ago," said a source from Match TV.

"But now Alexander has decided to take care of himself so that he can begin full training in 10 days."

There is even more good news in all this. Although Ovi exited the game early with an injury, he still had enough of an impact to be named the MVP of the game!

It might be mid-July, but our goal-scoring 🐐 is still finding the back of the net

Missing approximately 10 days of physical activity is not too bad when considering how bad this injury could have potentially been. Capitals fans can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Alex Ovechkin ended up scoring 31 goals and adding 34 assists in the 79 games he played for the Washington Capitals last season. He will tie the all-time NHL goals record held by Wayne Gretzky once he scores 41 more.
