Last week, we reported that Ron Francis, general manager of the Seattle Kraken, intended to make a special request to send Shane Wright to the AHL. Players from the CHL must have completed their four years in one of Canada's junior leagues before they can play in the AHL. Their only other option is the NHL. However, because of the cancelled COVID year, Wright didn't get that chance. It seems that the CHL has accepted the Kraken GM's request, which means that if Wright doesn't make the roster, he'll be able to report to their club-school, exceptionally. This opens the door for the other 31 teams to make similar requests, now that there's a precedent. With the Canadiens, Owen Beck is in exactly the same position. The youngster lost a year to COVID in the OHL, and it seems that the AHL is the best option for his development. Will Kent Hughes be tempted to follow in the footsteps of his Seattle counterpart and ask for a special request? That remains to be seen. After all, Beck would have a good chance of breaking into the CH line-up, were it not for the congestion at center and forward.
