A recent guest on Tony Marinaro's Sick Podcast, former player agent David Ettedgui mentioned that the Habs would be among the favorites to win the Stanley Cup in four or five years. He therefore provided his formation of the team in 2027-28, the year in which they could win the famous trophy. And there's a surprise in the form of William Nylander. Here's his line-up: Cole Caufield - Kirby Dach - William Nylander (acquired in 2024) Nick Suzuki - Juraj Slafkovsky - Alex Newhook Sean Farrell - Owen Beck - Joshua Roy Luke Tuch - Jan Mysak - Emil Heineman / Jesse Ylonen Kaiden Guhle - Logan Mailloux Lane Hutson - David Reinbacher Adam Engstrom - Michael Matheson Arber Xhekaj - Justin Barron Juuse Saros (acquired in 2025) Samuel Montembeault We know that the star forward will be in the last year of his contract this season, and that the Maple Leafs will be hard-pressed to sign him. A deal with the Habs would be out of the question, because Kent Hughes would never want to pay the price in young players and prospects, especially since the Leafs are a direct rival. Nylander would therefore sign with the Canadiens on the free agent market in the summer of 2024. Kent Hughes will certainly have the means to do so, but will he be willing to pay $10 million for him? That remains to be seen. Knowing Hughes' philosophy, which is to give room to young players and build with the draft, it would still be surprising. However, Ettedgui is the only one to have predicted a Stanley Cup Final for the Habs in 2021, even before the CH had confirmed their playoff berth. Perhaps he'll be right again this time.

Credit: RDT
