An expert at The Hockey Writers tried the experiment of replicating the 2017 NHL draft. It's always a fun exercise to do a few years down the line, so you can assess how the youngsters progressed and which teams had the compass in their eye.

Here's the new order established:

1. Cale Makar (4th overall)2. E. Pettersson (5th choice overall)3. Miro Heiskanen (3rd choice overall)4. Nick Suzuki (13th overall)5. Nico Hischier (1st overall)6. Robert Thomas (20th overall)7. Jason Robertson (39th overall)8. Josh Norris (19th overall)9. Martin Necas (12th overall)10. Drake Batherson (121st overall)

What's next :

11. Kailer Yamamoto12. Jake Oettinger13. Filip Chytil14. Erik Brannstrom15. Henri Jokiharju16. Eeli Tolvanen17. Alex Formenton18. Alexandre Texier19. Casey Mittelstadt20. Nolan Patrick21. Owen Tippett22. Nicolas Hague23. Maxime Comtois24. Michael Rasmussen25. Timothy Liljegren26. Mario Ferraro27. Morgan Geekie28. S. Aho (Islanders)29. Jesper Boqvist30. Ryan Poehling31. Morgan Frost32. Gabriel Vilardi

It's no surprise that Cale Makar is ranked first, which would have made him a New Jersey Devil, while Nick Suzuki should have been with the Colorado Avalanche.

Note that Filip Chytil, who plays with Alexis Lafreniere in New York, should have been selected by Vegas, which would have made a big difference in the Max Pacioretty deal.
