The Arizona Coyotes just made a surprising and unexpected decision with one of their top prospects, Dylan Guenther.

The organization's first overall pick in 2021 was reassigned to the WHL after playing 33 games in the NHL this season. Yet the 18-year-old had done well, racking up six goals and 15 points.

Guenther's rights were traded at the Western Junior League trade deadline in January from the Edmonton Oil Kings to the already overmatched Seattle Thunderbirds.

Arizona will have burned the first year of their young player's entry-level contract, even though he will finish the year in the WHL. This is a very rare occurrence, as teams normally use the nine-game tryout window to get a feel for a prospect, as the Seattle Kraken did with Shane Wright.

His junior club was already favored to win the WHL championship, so now that a player of Guenther's caliber is coming into the lineup, they may have their ticket to the Memorial Cup finals, straight away.

Guenther was also part of Team Canada's most recent gold medal win at the World Junior Championship. He scored the golden goal during overtime of the final game against the Czech Republic.
