The Toronto Maple Leafs are facing monumental decisions when it comes to re-signing two of their top players. Both Auston Matthews and William Nylander are one year away from unrestricted free agency, and although it appears that the Leafs and Matthews are on the right track for an extension, negotiations with Nylander appear to be going poorly.
Leafs, Nylander Not Close to Extension
According to NHL insider Chris Johnston, Nylander and the Leafs are nowhere close to striking a deal.

It appears that the Leafs are willing to give the Swedish forward a raise from his current $6.9 million deal to a contract in the $8 million raise, but this appears to be a non-starter for Nylander who thinks of himself as a $10 million dollar player.

Despite Nylander's polarizing reputation among Leafs fans, he has consistently showed up in the playoffs, while other members of the Core Four have routinely shrunk. Nylander has tallied 40 points in 50 career playoff games.
Where they Go From Here
While its obvious that the best option for both Toronto and Nylander is to agree to a new contract the benefits both sides, the Leafs may not be able to give him what he wants due to their cap situation. As good as Nylander was last year (40 goals 47 assists), he is not worth a 10 million dollar per year contract, especially in a flat cap world. If a deal can't be worked out then the Leafs must trade Nylander, as they can't afford to lose him for nothing like they did with Ryan O'Reilly. Nylander has 10 team no trade list, but other than that he has no other trade protection. At an affordable cap hit of $6.9 million, teams should be lining up for this currently underpaid player. The Leafs should be able to recoup a haul for the player, in the range of a 1st round pick, top prospect and a young roster player. As Seen on Twitter
