There is a shortage of words to describe his first season in the NCAA. What young Lane Hutson has been able to do so far this season is simply outstanding. The 62nd overall pick in the recent draft, as you may recall, scored two more points on Saturday to eclipse Cole Caufield's production in his first NCAA campaign. The CH small forward had 36 points in 36 games. Hutson now has 38 points in 29 games. In addition to surpassing the young Habs star's mark with seven fewer games played, do I need to remind you that Hutson is a defenseman, not a forward? That detail makes his accomplishment even more impressive. He is so dominant, that in his first college season, he will be seriously considered for the ultimate honor in the NCAA, the Hobey-Baker trophy, given annually to the best college player in the league. Even if he were not to win this award, the mere fact that he is being considered, when he is a freshman, is completely insane!

The All-American defender, who just celebrated his 19th birthday on Feb. 14, is expected to play another college season next year to continue his physical development and perfect his defensive game. However, while I have no doubt that he could make the jump right away and have an immediate impact with the Habs, it's best to take your time with him. He's a real gem among the team's pool of prospects and it's best to make sure you give him time to add a few extra pounds to his muscle frame to help his transition to the NHL. Like Cale Makar who played two seasons in the NCAA before making the late-season jump to the Colorado Avalanche, I feel like it's already set up for Hutson to do the same thing next year. I can't wait to see him with a Tricolore jersey on his back!
