For several months now, Montreal Canadiens fans have been dreaming big about a young sensation from British Columbia and future generational player, Connor Bedard. While the club's unexpected start to the season had put the possibility of getting their hands on the first overall pick of the 2023 draft in doubt, the Habs' recent underachievement has intensified fan interest in the 17-year-old. Furthermore, his stellar performances during the World Junior Championship, where he is on pace to break records unmatched in the history of Team Canada, as well as in the history of the WJC itself, further fuels the desire to see him in a Tricolore uniform come June. By the way, TVA Sports' excellent reporter Anthony Martineau spoke with Connor's father, Thomas Bedard, who revealed some very interesting information about his son and his family. He was instinctively drawn to field hockey sticks. From the age of two, he always had his mini-stick in his hands and his ball nearby. It was all he could play with! When we were watching TV, he had very little interest, but when NHL highlights were on the screen, he would stare at the TV non-stop! - Thomas Bedard Connor's parents soon realized that their son had something special about hockey, as he was ahead of everyone else his age, even in his early years. <At first, like all kids, he would fall down and get back up. But as the months passed, we quickly realized he was ahead of the game. At first, my wife and I both knew it, but subconsciously refused to tell each other. Then came a time when I pulled my wife aside and said, Okay, how does he do all that? His shooting, his faking... I'm not even capable of doing what he's doing and I'm his father! In his first official game, he really showed some skills that the other kids didn't have. Could I say at that point that he would be the Connor Bedard we know today? Absolutely not. But he was doing little things that were abnormal for a boy his age. - Thomas Bedard Where it gets particularly interesting for CH fans is the part where Thomas mentioned the family's huge interest in the Montreal club. If it were up to Thomas, the Canadiens would be right at the top of the Bedard family's list. <Montreal would be amazing! I know it's a high-pressure place, but I grew up watching the '70s Canadiens and it would be fantastic to see Connor land with the CH. - Thomas Bedard Connor Bedard's father concludes with a statement that is as surprising as it is interesting. Fifty years ago, before I was born, the Bedard family was settled in Quebec City. Since then, our clan has moved to Western Canada. That's where I was born and where Connor was born. I only learned about this a few years ago. I definitely want to go back to Quebec one day, so if it was ever for Connor, it would make a lot of sense for our family. - Thomas Bedard Let's just say, if it makes a lot of sense for the family to go back to Quebec, it would make a lot of sense for the Habs to get their hands on a huge talent like Connor, who only comes along once every ten or fifteen years.
