There was a lot of disappointment in the Ryan Murray camp in June 2012 when the Edmonton Oilers chose Nail Yakupov over him in the first selection of the amateur auction. Now, 10 years later, the Edmonton Oilers have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Canadian defenceman for $750,000.

Ryan Murray was a member of the Colorado Avalanche last season, but did not play a game in the playoffs. The acquisition of Josh Manson at the trade deadline took the wind out of his sails.

Despite the injury to Samuel Girard, who missed 13 playoff games, it was Jack Johnson who took over instead. Johnson had been injured late in the season, but returned to the game the day after the Quebecer was injured in the second round.

A defensive defenseman, Ryan Murray is able to move the puck thanks to his relatively fluid skate. He is not the second overall pick the Columbus Blue Jackets were expecting. He'll already be on his fourth team in four years, having been particularly slowed by injuries early in his career.

It's hard to know if he had the ability to become a dominant defenceman in the Bettman circuit. The Edmonton Oilers will take a chance on him. With injuries occurring at any time during the schedule, it's best to have some insurance policies. It's hard to say if Ryan Murray will play the first game of the regular season.
