Drew Doughty is well aware of the formidable task ahead as the Los Angeles Kings prepare to face off against the Edmonton Oilers.

Doughty has had his hands full trying to contain Connor McDavid in the past, with varying degrees of success.

As Game 1 approaches, Doughty warns McDavid to brace for some extra attention during the series.

"We don't forget," Doughty remarked. "I don't think we'll be taking foolish penalties against him, but if the opportunity arises to hit him, we'll definitely seize it."

During last year's playoff clash between the Oilers and Kings, Doughty was relegated to the press box due to a wrist injury. The Kings were making their post-season comeback after a three-year hiatus.

While there have been some minor adjustments to both lineups, the key battle persists: Doughty and the Los Angeles' defensive line must put in a tremendous effort to contain McDavid, the NHL's five-time top scorer.

«I'm excited for that opportunity,» Doughty said. «I love playing against him. It's super difficult, but you've got to be on your toes at all moments. I'm starting to learn his game a little more from watching and playing against him, and I'm sure he's learning me, too. So it's going to be an absolute battle out there. But if we do our jobs the way we know we can, I think we'll be a big factor into whether or not we win this series.»

Los Angeles hasn't advanced in the playoffs since their second Stanley Cup victory in 2014.

Doughty likened watching from the sidelines to observing his own child playing a game.

"I was constantly worried about someone making a mistake. I was totally absorbed in the game. I'd shout from up top if I thought there should be a penalty, and when we scored, I'd be jumping for joy."

Several players from both teams are expected to dive into the physical aspect of the game immediately. Regardless of the series' duration, it promises to be an entertaining showdown.
