The Montreal Canadiens made an intriguing announcement today, as we learned that prospect Miguël Tourigny has signed a one-year contract with the Laval Rocket.

Why is this an intriguing signing? Because by signing an AHL contract with Laval, he will have another year left on his NHL entry-level contract with the Habs, without having to lose his rights on the free agent player market. Moreover, the 21-year-old Quebecer has a very interesting profile. He is the type of offensive defenseman of the new generation of the NHL. He is very mobile and has excellent vision. He finished his junior season with 80 points in 65 games. This season, in the Slovak Elite League, he finished the campaign with an interesting 24 points in 39 games. To give you an idea, the second overall pick in the last draft, Simon Nemec, finished last season in the same league with a total of 26 points in 39 games. Of course, the latter has much more talent and he made this production at 18 years old, not 21. However, this still gives a good picture of Tourigny's offensive potential, who could certainly play an important role in the Rocket's defensive line next year.
