The Habs seem to have made some very good moves with their high picks in the last draft, selecting Juraj Slafkovsky, Filip Mesar, Owen Beck and Lane Hutson in the late second round. If any of these selections seemed to be the most criticized, it was possibly Mesar's, as there were several good young players with a similar profile still available at #26. However, the CH training camp has uncovered a raw talent in Mesar that just needs to be polished. After leaving a good impression with NHL players, the Slovakian has also shown great things with the Laval Rocket. His level of play has even fueled some debate as to whether it would be better to keep him in the AHL in a higher calibre or send him to Kitchener in the OHL to play more in a lower calibre. The Habs opted for the second option and it seems to have been the right one for the 18-year-old's development. In an interview with the excellent Marco D'Amico of Montreal Hockey Now, the 26th overall pick revealed some very interesting information about the discussions he had with the organization, which explained his dismissal to Kitchener. They told me that they knew I could play at the AHL level, but that it was better to get 80 points in the OHL than 20 points in the AHL. - Filip Mesar The Habs prospect even shows some nice introspection on the staff's decision to send him to dominate in junior. The AHL is not an easy league. If I had stayed in Laval, I would have played the third or fourth line. They'd rather send me to Kitchener, where I'd get big minutes, power play time and all that. I think it was a good decision for this year. - Filip Mesar The man who is also known as Juraj Slafkovsky's best friend adds that his time in Kitchener has big benefits for his learning. The benefit is learning to play big minutes and be a leader in a team. Scoring big goals for the team and getting a lot of points. Last year I played with men, but I played third or fourth line and didn't get enough points, so this year I can get more points, better confidence and be better (overall). - Filip Mesar Number 48 of the Kitchener Rangers has been doing very well since he arrived there. The team was a long way from being a powerhouse, but the addition of a pure talent like Mesar has energized his team's forward. In six games so far, he has five goals and nine points. The Habs have another great young player on their hands!
