Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens have yet to come to an agreement with their new centre Kirby Dach. The youngster still has a lot to prove in the NHL and it may seem like a difficult fit, but he is far from alone in this position.

Indeed, RDS has published a top 5 list of the best compensated free agents still without a contract. With the season just around the corner and training camps starting in a few days, it's pretty concerning.

In the top 5, we find Dallas Stars left winger Jason Robertson. The 23-year-old had a great season in 2021-22, when he totalled 79 points, including 41 goals, in just 74 games.

Robertson is presumably asking for a lucrative long-term contract, which would make sense, especially since the Stars still have just over $6 million available under the salary cap.

Kirby Dach is a close second on this list, but with all the talk about him, a deal with the Tricolore would be close to being done.

Maple Leafs defenceman Rasmus Sandin is third on the list. The 22-year-old hasn't broken anything in the NHL, but the Leafs are currently almost $1.5 million over the salary cap. Kyle Dubas still has some work to do to sign the defenceman and meet the salary cap.

In fourth place is Senators left winger Alex Formenton. Scoring 32 points in 79 games last season, the fact othat he's still not under contract is pretty intriguing, considering the Senators have just over $7 million left on their books. With all the personnel moves Pierre Dorion has made this summer, is the 22-year-old still part of the team's plans? The question is asked.

Finally, Arizona Coyotes centre Barrett Hayton is also awaiting a new contract. With over $20 million under the salary cap, money is certainly not the issue in his case. Hayton is a fifth overall pick in 2018 and is slow to get going, as evidenced by his 31 points in 94 games in the Bettman circuit.

It's not an easy situation in Arizona, when the kids aren't being coached very well and will be playing in a neighborhood arena this season. Would Hayton have requested a trade? We'll find out soon enough.
