Marc Bergevin did a good job in Montreal, but towards the end it was a little more chaotic. The former GM gave out more emotional contracts, which is not a good thing when you're general manager, especially in Montreal. Kent Hughes is now stuck with overpaid players, including Brendan Gallagher, Josh Anderson and Joel Armia. Hughes has no room for manoeuvre. While the new generation was already starting to look promising when he arrived, with Cole Caufield and Kaiden Guhle to name but two, his payroll was far too full for a bottom-of-the-range team. Next summer, Hughes should have plenty of room under the cap, which could allow him to buy out a contract. Of course, the first to come to mind is Joel Armia, who simply doesn't deliver the goods for a $3.4 million player. Barring a major turnaround in his case, Hughes could buy him out next summer, when he has just one year remaining on his contract.
