With less than three weeks to go before the trade deadline, Timo Meier has been linked to several trade rumors. He is currently playing out the last year of his contract and the San Jose Sharks have openly expressed a desire to move their talented forward.

In connection with this issue, reputable insider Pierre LeBrun has revealed a new information regarding a possible trade.

The Sharks have not yet given Meier's agent the right to discuss a contract extension with the various teams. Remember that the 26-year-old Swiss player will become a restricted free agent.

Given the construction of his current contract, the qualifying offer to not lose his rights at the end of the year is a surprising $10M. Unsurprisingly, this formality scares off teams that want to acquire Meier. That's why they want to make sure they have a deal before finalizing a transaction.

What we're learning is that the Sharks will only give permission when the offers are higher. So they are using this leverage to raise the stakes.

The informant also says that the Devils and Hurricanes are still very interested in the services of the player.

In 53 games this season, Timo Meier has 51 points, including 30 goals.
