Sean Reynolds, who covers the Jets for Sportsnet, recently discussed the reasons behind Winnipeg's decision not to trade star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.

The Reasoning Behind Keeping Hellebuyck

In a recent episode of the Full Press NHL Podcast, Reynolds delved into the dynamics involving the Jets and Hellebuyck. He explored why a potential trade to the New Jersey Devils hasn't materialized.

"I think Connor Hellebuyck would be a great fit with the New Jersey Devils, but the New Jersey Devils want to go for the cup this year. So what they want to do is take their prospect pool, one of the best in the NHL, and say 'we will give you this, and you give us this guy so we can be good right now and you can be good in the future.' The Winnipeg Jets do not want that. What they want is the New Jersey Devils' assets that make them really good right now... New Jersey is not going to do it if they subtract three really good forwards and another defenseman from the process." - Sean Reynolds

A Strategy of Reorganization Over Rebuilding

It appears the Jets are opting for a reorganization of talent rather than a full-scale rebuild. This approach was evident in their trade of Pierre-Luc Dubois, where they received both picks and prospects in exchange for a seasoned player.

If Mark Scheifele, who has requested a trade, ends up being moved, it's likely he'll be the one to go instead of Hellebuyck, if the team has to choose between the two.

Without Hellebuyck in net, the Jets would compromise their playoff hopes significantly. Losing a Vezina Trophy contender would put immense pressure on their backup goaltender, Laurent Brossoit, and adversely affect their playoff prospects.

That said, if a good offer comes in for Scheifele, the Jets could very well make the move.

Both players have only a year left on their contracts, and it would be surprising if either re-signs, making their futures with the team increasingly uncertain.
