Former hockey player Mike Meeker who played in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins recently passed away at age 66.

It is never easy to hear about anyone passing away too soon. Getting the opportunity to play in the NHL, as sport of span as it may be is considered the holy grail for most hockey players. Today we learned a former Penguin who got that chance passed away.

Meeker may have never recorded an NHL point, and only played in four games, but he did get to experience that opportunity. He was drafted 25th overall by the penguins in the 1978 draft.

His hockey career spanned many different leagues, such as OHL, NCAA, AHL, and Karlskrona, Sweden.

Through all the teams and leagues he played in, his best showing was with the NHL Binghamton Dusters where he played in 75 games, accumulating 65 points with a 30-goal season. This was the same season 1978-79 that he played his four games with the Penguins.

Meeker was best known later on throughout his community as a mentor and a coach. He helped young players develop using his experience to guide them. Meeker was known for making his community a better place to live.

Anyone who had the privilege to know Mike Meeker will miss him.
