The contract talks between the Edmonton Oilers, GM Stan Bowman and Leon Draisaitl aren't going smoothly.

The gap between what the Oilers are offering and what Draisaitl is asking for is bigger than we expected.

Draisaitl, who racked up 106 points last season with 41 goals and 65 assists, is a crucial part of Edmonton's dynamic duo with Connor McDavid. He's set to become a free agent after next season, so securing his future with the Oilers should be a top priority.

Leon won't discuss a new contract once the upcoming NHL season begins. The team has a few weeks to work out a new deal before training camp starts on September 19.

If they manage to strike a deal, it could be an eight-year contract worth $13.5 million annually. This would make Draisaitl the highest-paid player in NHL history, surpassing Auston Matthews' $13.25 million per year.

This news is definitely worrying for Oilers fans. The thought of one of their core players potentially leaving in free agency is not something they want to entertain. It'll give them countless nightmares. It's clear that both he and the team would prefer to finalize the contract but there's a business part of it too.

With Edmonton aiming to keep their Stanley Cup window open, this is a storyline to watch closely. Hopefully, they can bridge this gap soon and keep Draisaitl for the long haul.
