There's been some talk about how Jeff Marek, a longtime broadcaster, ended up parting ways with Sportsnet after 13 seasons. Marek allegedly shared 2024 NHL draft pick information with Mark Seidel, the Barrie Colts' director of scouting and player personnel. Seidel then posted that info on his social media before it was made public. That didn't sit well with Sportsnet or the NHL.

Seidel claims he is still a NHL media member, and was briefly a scout for the Minnesota Wild, but that didn't last long. Apparently, other scouts raised concerns about him not showing up games. When the higher-ups at the Wild dug into it, they found out he wasn't putting in the work, and he admitted his wrongdoings . I didn't perform to my expectations. The Wild had their concerns, too, but they were extremely gracious in my time there. In most cases, insiders-know who's getting drafted a minute or two before it's official, but they usually don't dispel the notion. Unfortunately, Seidel was sharing these picks from Vegas, where there were serious rules about betting that night. The NHL and Nevada gaming authorities were uncomfortable about how he was getting such accurate info and why he was posting it to social media. Ultimately, the connection between Marek and Seidel came to light, and not long after, Marek was out at Sportsnet.

Meanwhile, Seidel was also fired by Barrie today.

It's a mess and possibly unfair on both reporters that they were fired for doing their jobs, meaning we come out of this report with more questions than answers.
