The hockey world is reeling from the tragedy involving Columbus Blue Jackets star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew. The details coming out about their deaths only make this awful situation even harder to comprehend.

Sean M. Higgins, the man who was drunk behind the wheel when he crashed and killed Johnny and Matthew, was also arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) years ago but walked free because the officer didn't show up in court.

And now, another frustrating detail has come to light. It turns out that Higgins was working at Gaudenzia Inc., a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, of all places. He is also a former U.S. Army major. A decorated serviceman who served with the 44th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Kosovo.

The 43 year-old, married man and father of two daughters and a man of that kind of previous stature should be expected to embody discipline and responsibility. Instead, he made choices that have shattered lives.

Gaudenzia Inc. announced that Higgins has been placed on leave following the crash and the charges against him.

It's our hope that this is just the beginning of the consequences Higgins will face for his reckless actions. His decisions cost two young lives, and will make Johhny's two kids his wife Meredith, and Matthew's wife Madeline and baby Tripp grow up without their father and husband living among them.

We all want to see justice served to Higgins. He caused a tragedy that hits deep, and as a hockey a sports community, we're mourning and supporting one another through this unimaginable time.
