The Dallas Stars have cleared over $10 million in salary room under the cap by sending Tyler Seguin and Nils Lundkvist to long-term injured reserve.
Injuries mounting, yet they are still one of the Western Conference leaders for a shot at a Stanley Cup title.
Now with increased room under the cap, Dallas has the room to make a move, which is exactly what they did. ESPN's Kevin Weekes reports that a working agreement between the Stars and San Jose Sharks for a Mikael Granlund swap is in place.
Granlund, in his second season with San Jose, leads the team in scoring for a second-consecutive campaign. In 52 contests, he has 15 markers and 30 helpers (45 points). Rookie Macklin Celebrini trails with 37 (16G-21A).
The Sharks' 15-33-6 record lands them at NHL rock bottom, and with a rebuild in full gear, key assets must go, including Granlund, who was shopped for a long, long time and a top target for a swap.
Former Edmonton Oiler Cody Ceci, a member of the Sharks, is also part of this deal and will be making his way over to Dallas with Granlund as well. Draft picks are also involved in the trade.
Nothing is signed yet, but sources say a swap between the Stars and Sharks is happening for sure. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was the first to report Ceci as part of the package deal.
The Stars' 33-17-1 record ties them for second in the Central Division. With Granlund, and possibly additional assets like Ceci and maybe more coming, it could make a strong playoff run a reality.
