The Vancouver Canucks continue their busy night reshaping their roster as they have completed a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins. After trading J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers earlier tonight the Canucks have stayed busy completing another trade. According to Elliotte Friedman, the Canucks are acquiring Marcus Pettersson from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The trade brings in Pettersson who has spent the last six seasons playing for the Penguins as a crucial part of their defensive unit. So far this season in 47 games with the Penguins Pettersson had 18 points and was one of the best defensemen on the team. At his best Pettersson is a solid two-way minute-eating defenseman who is a good puck mover. According to reports the Canucks will be sending the first round pick they got from the Miller trade along with Vincent Desharnais to the New York Rangers

It seems as though Danton Heinen could also be traded with Frank Seravalli indicating that he is on the move in a report.

The details have now come in with the Canucks receiving Pettersson and young exciting forward Drew O'Connor in exchange for the Rangers' 2025 first-round pick (conditional), forward Danton Heinen, defenseman Vincent Desharnais, and 2024 third-round pick Melvin Fernstrom.

The Canucks continue to reshape their forward group by adding Drew O'Connor as well as the addition of Pettersson on the back end. In just his second NHL season O'Connor has shown flashes of top-six potential while playing with the Penguins and has a good speed and size combo that will be coveted by the Canucks. In exchange, the Canucks do have to give up a middle-of-the-lineup forward of their own in Danton Heinen as well as depth defenseman Vincent Desharnais who brought incredible size and physicality to the lineup. The Penguins also continue building their prospect pool with 2024 3rd-round pick of the Canucks Melvin Fernstrom heading East. Fernstrom is a highly skilled ultra-offensive player who puts up incredible numbers in the Swedish junior league but has yet to see his game translate well to professional hockey in Sweden. This move by the Canucks shows that they are still committed to winning this season despite sending away J.T. Miller and will be buying at the trade deadline and looking to build around Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson going forward. As the details are revealed we will bring all the latest updates on the trade and what it means for the Canucks going forward as they continue to re-shape their roster.
