The Colorado Avalanche become the next team to hire a female coach as they have added Kim Weiss to their organization for the upcoming 2024-25 season. Kim Weiss already made history back when she became the first-ever female coach in NCAA Division III history, and now the Colorado Avalanche's AHL affiliate team the Colorado Eagles, have just hired Weiss to be their video coach for the upcoming season. We're excited to add Matt and Kim to the Eagles coaching staff, said Avalanche Assistant General Manager and Eagles General Manager Kevin McDonald. «Both individuals bring strong coaching and playing backgrounds and will be valuable additions to Head Coach Aaron Schneekloth's staff.

Weiss is 35-years-old, and prior to entering the coaching side of things, she played at Trinity College during the 2010-11 season. She then spent two seasons as an assistant coach in the NAHL, and then became an associate head coach for the Maryland Black Bears. Prior to the start of the 2023-24 season, Weiss was chosen to be one of the assistant coaches for Trinity College, which made her become the first woman ever to coach in Division III. Weiss is the latest female to be hired by an NHL organization in what appears to be a new trend recently, as Jessica Campbell was recently coaching in the AHL with the Coachella Valley Firebirds, and ended up being promoted to the NHL's Seattle Kraken as one of the assistant coaches. Campbell became the first female in NHL history to get a position behind a club's bench.
