Former NHLer Danny Dekeyser is launching a lawsuit against an insurance company who he claims failed to pay him all of his disability payments. <a href='https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/nhl/red-wings/2024/08/05/former-detroit-red-wing-danny-dekeyser-files-lawsuit-disability-payments/74677572007/' class='lien_marqueur' target='_blank' rel='noopener'>Now retired Danny Dekeyser</a>, who spent his entire career with the Detroit Red Wings, has initiated a lawsuit against the HCC Life Insurance Company, as he claims they have not paid him up to $700,000 in disability payments. Dekeyser is now a real estate agent in the state of Michigan. Dekeyser began his NHL career with the Red Wings in 2013 until he left the league in 2022. He attempted to make a comeback the following season in the AHL by signing with the Toronto Marlies, however he only played three games before he injured his back once again, forcing him into a permanent retirement. He claims he is still owed almost $700,000 by the aforementioned insurance company from the time he stopped playing due to the back injury. <q>The purpose of this case is to compel Defendant HCC Life Insurance Company to provide certain long-term disability benefits in the amounts and at the coverage levels promised, as well as for an accounting, and an award of attorney fees and costs incurred as a consequence of Defendant's failure to do so.</q> <div align='center'><blockquote class='twitter-tweet' data-lang='en'><a href='https://twitter.com/GaryMiles_DN/status/1821003473954963681'> </a></blockquote></div> The six-year, $30 million contract that Dekeyser signed with the Red Wings in 2016 turned out to be a disaster. The first three seasons went uneventful, but the big problems began during the 2019-20 season, when Dekeyser played only eight games and suffered a left foot and lower back injury, forcing him out for the rest of that season. He underwent surgery and came back the following season, but only played 47 games. The final year of his six-year contract also was problematic, as Dekeyser missed 23 games. The battle with the insurance company is only just beginning, as the company has not provided any response yet, and there has been absolutely nothing proven in court. This is likely to drag on for quite some time.
