NHL commissioner Gary Bettman recently gave an interview on ESPN that left many scratching their heads, especially when it came to discussing Connor McDavid before Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers.

Questioned by the well-known Stephen A. Smith about McDavid, Bettman's answers were strangely vague.
When asked about the best player in the world, Bettman responded.
He is a true star player. Most experts and fans believe he is the best player in the world, and he might well be... I believe he is the top scorer in the playoffs... [...]" - Gary Bettman, who also noted that the outcome of tonight's game is unpredictable.

The hesitant reply didn't sit well with viewers. McDavid is widely regarded as not just the best hockey player today, but possibly one of the greatest of all time. Bettman's noncommittal response was surprising.
Bettman also fumbled when he talked about McDavid's performance in the playoffs, saying, "I believe he is the top scorer in the playoffs.»
Gary Bettman talks about Connor McDavid like he's never even watched hockey.

It's no debate. McDavid is by far, the top scorer in the 2024 playoffs and in fact his 42 points, which is fifth all time is nearly double the points of the Florida Panthers' top scorer and Selke Winner Aleksander Barkov, at 22. All he needs is one more win to cement his legacy and finally become a Stanley Cup Champion.
