This summer Jonathan Marchessault left the Vegas Golden Knights to sign with the Nashville Predators and today he revealed the reasons for his decision to leave.

The Nashville Predators went on a spending spree this summer in an effort to become a contender. The Predators signed Jonathan Marchessault, Steven Stamkos, and Brady Skjei all within a matter of hours.

Since signing with the Nashville Predators we have heard from Steven Stamkos on the reasons he decided not to return to the Tampa Bay Lightning. A lack of interest in a long-term contract seemed to be the main factor. Today an interview with Jonathan Marchessault revealed his situation was quite similar to his new teammate.

Lack of loyalty from the Vegas Golden Knights led to Jonathan Marchessault's departure

In a new interview with The Cam & Strick Podcast Jonathan Marchessault opened up about negotiations with the Vegas Golden Knights. Jonathan Marchessault was willing to come back to Vegas but asked GM Kelly McCrimmon and Assistant GM George McPhee for a 4 year deal.

I called (Kelly) on Friday and (George) on Saturday and when Sunday showed up nothing was budging. They didn't want to go anything long-term, they were in the ballpark of three years, I wanted four. After the next day they were like 'we just can't' so I was like all things come to an end and that's it. There were some offers but nothing to consider really. So, we hung up and still to this day haven't talked to each other. Marchessault said.

Jonathan Marchessault blamed the Vegas Golden Knights unwillingness to commit to him long term on their overall culture. The team has built a culture of survival of the fittest and always looking to upgrade the weakest link. This means they prefer to keep shorter contracts that are easier to move if needed.

Every year they have the mentality that you need to always get better but at the same time there are a few guys you have to treat well and that is something that is lacking in Vegas. Marchessault said.

He added, There's definitely no loyalty but at the same time you are there to win. I don't mind that mindset. Obviously I'm disappointed that I left. I thought I've done good enough in the last seven years to deserve what I deserve, but that's life and you move on.

While Jonathan Marchessault is disappointed to be leaving he does not hold any ill will toward the Vegas Golden Knights, their fans, or the front office moving forward.

I have nothing bad to say about Vegas for the last seven years.

One has to wonder if Jonathan Marchessault will have the Nashville Predators' first meeting against the Vegas Golden Knights circled on his calendar. The opportunity to prove to the front office he deserved the loyalty that they seem unwilling to give out often.
