Alex Ovechkin won the game in overtime for the Capitals last night in Ottawa, and in doing so he just broke an all-time NHL record.

Alex Ovechkin continued his Hall-of-Fame career in exciting fashion with a goal against the Ottawa Senators to give Washington a 1-0 victory.

That was his 873rd in the league, which puts him 21 back of Wayne Gretzky's all-time record, a number he has quite obviously been chipping away at.

Ovechkin probably won't catch Gretzky this season and could catch him early in the upcoming season, but he's still breaking records.

Alex Ovechkin has scored on the most goalies in NHL history

The most recent tally came on rookie goaltender Leevi Merilainen and in the process, made Merilainen the 179th different goalie Ovechkin has scored on, now an NHL record after passing Jaromir Jagr.

Fittingly enough, Marc-Andre Fleury (28) and Henrik Lundqvist (24) top the leaderboard for most frequent victims of Ovechkin's offense. That, of course, is a product of their lengthy divisional rivalries.

Some other notables on that list include Carey Price, Martin Brodeur, Jean-Sebastien Giguere, and Ed Belfour.

With Ovechkin likely to play beyond this season, he is going to be facing and scoring on even more rookie goaltenders.

Though names like Auston Matthews take all the headlines when it comes to phenomenal scoring paces, Ovechkin's brilliance over two decades is just marvelous.

Fans are watching the final chapters of such a career, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The Great 8's relentless chase towards greatness is what every hockey enthusiast must relish because, in all probability, there won't be another one like him in quite a while.
