The Oilers and Canucks are set for their much-anticipated rematch tonight, and Conor Garland may have turned up the heat with his latest public enemy comments.

Conor Garland is a Vancouver fan favorite and a massive pain for the city of Edmonton.

The rugged winger is a no-brainer to be named the Canucks' unsung hero following a rollercoaster season. He'll have lots of eyes on him Thursday at Rogers Place, too.

Down 3-2 deep in the third period of their Saturday 3-2 victory over the Oilers, Garland tried to take out Connor McDavid and had him pinned on the ice attempting to take a matching penalty in an effort to not let the Oilers captain tie up the game and send it to overtime.

McDavid retaliated with an over-the-head punch and gruesome cross-check to Garland's face.

The result was a three-game suspension to McDavid that incensed Edmonton. People were questioning aloud both Garland's and the NHL's methodology in putting the league's brightest star on the shelf for that long.

«Certainly think three games is a little too much, but I guess we don't overly care about having our best players in the league in the game,» said Oilers centre Leon Draisaitl.

Retribution is being called for. Canuck Kiefer Sherwood couldn't help but smile knowing the drama will most certainly spill over into Thursday's contest.

«We're all waiting for that puck drop - it should be fun,» said Sherwood. «There's a little extra hate and passion that goes into those games and that's why they spark up more.»

Conor Garland says he doesn't care one bit

Garland is definitely unphased by it all, and his comments today when he was asked about it surely added more fuel to the burning fire.

«I do not care,» shrugged Garland. «I was just trying to win a hockey game. I didn't hurt him or slew foot him. I guess they're upset about the hold. I didn't try to injure him. Whatever comes with that, comes with that.»

After a season ravaged by injury, Garland's grinding style has been something to rally around. Everybody always says the Canucks don't have any grit. Tonight, we will get the answer to that.
