Mitch Marner has been in trade rumors all summer long, but now he's being linked to the New York Rangers in what would be a bombshell of a deal. The trade has Mitch Marner heading to the big apple along with Timothy Liljegren in exchange for Jacob Trouba and Alexis Lafreniere. Maple Leafs Get: Alexis Lafreniere Jacob Trouba Rangers Get: Mitch Marner Timothy Liljegren At this point, everyone knows who Mitch Marner is and what he provides on the ice. Is he a better player than anyone else in this deal right now? Most people would probably say he is. Will he continue to be the best player of these four? That is a little less certain. Lafrenière finally started to show signs of why the Rangers took him 1st overall in 2020. he put up 28 goals and 57 points in the regular season, and followed that up with another 8 goals and 14 points in 16 playoff games, including this remarkable individual effort against the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference final.

As such, his value has never been higher. He finally looks like a player who could slot in on a team's top line and not look out of place. Replacing him with Mitch Marner would certainly be an upgrade for the Rangers in the short term, but they could regret such a decision later on. Trouba meanwhile, is trending the opposite direction. The 30-year-old potted just 3 goals and netting a total of 22 points in the regular season last year, which is among the worst seasons in his career in terms of points. He followed that up with a single goal and 7 points in 16 playoff games, which was certainly an improvement production-wise, but he was largely a net negative player for the team has he repeatedly took bone-headed penalties like the one below, which he was lucky to get away with just a minor. Why even bother taking the body when you can just elbow them in head? - Jacob Trouba probably

The Rangers have reportedly been trying to trade Trouba this summer, so it is not unsurprising that he would be included in a deal for Mitch Marner. How much value does he really have though? After the additions of Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman Larsson, does Trouba even fit on the Leafs? Furthermore, is he even an upgrade on Timothy Liljegren? These are the kinds of questions Brad Treliving will have to ask himself before making such a trade.
