Mitch Marner is going into his last full season under contract as a Leaf and one reporter makes a suggestion about the status of the upcoming UFA.

Last week we watched the Maple Leafs crown Auston Matthews as the 26th captain of the Leafs and in doing so also announced that John Tavares will wear an 'A' on his sweater. The believe is that Morgan Reilly will also continue to be an alternate captain on the Leafs, as a long-standing Leaf, signed through the 2029-30 season.

Marner was there to watch Matthews receive his honor, as one of last season's alternates himself. But one reporter has suggested that Marner is not a guarantee to wear the 'A' this year.

Nick Alberga on 'Leafs morning take' today brought up the idea and suggested that Marner should not be one of the alternate captains.

"I think if you're the Maple Leafs, you have a new coach, you want some new blood. I could see Chris Tanev wearing an 'A'. I wonder what that means for a certain guy who's a year away from UFA. My reasoning is, and this is not about Marner -- you are passing the torch to the next wave... You're trying to overturn this roster a bit, Tanev is signed for six years. I think you would be doing to same thing if you brought the same leadership group back."

GM Brad Treliving has noted that nothing is definite yet regarding the alternate. Chris Tanev is a viable option for the team, echoed by Alberga.

With Marner's contract uncertainty after this season, it would make sense to move in another alternate who has some long-term commitment to the Leafs. In addition to Tanev, Nylander's monster contract will be kicking him keeping him a Leaf for the long haul as well.

We will see if the Leaf's give Marner the opportunity to continue as one of the alternates on the team, or if it is time to move forward and include one of the guys who are staying with the team long term.
