Former Montreal Canadiens defenceman Cale Fleury, who was claimed by the Seattle Kraken in the expansion draft, signed a one-season contract extension with the organization on Tuesday. With a two-year contract, Fleury is expected to start the regular season with the AHL's feeder club. However, he could be called upon to come in as a backup at any time during the regular schedule.

At 23 years old, Cale Fleury played 41 games with the Montreal Canadiens in 2019-2020. At that point, the club's experts knew that the defenceman could not aspire to more than a role on a third pair of defencemen. In the 2021 expansion draft, the Seattle Kraken set their sights on the young prospect. In 58 games last season, Cale Fleury scored seven goals and 33 points with the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League. Primarily known for his defensive skills, Fleury showed the organization that he could also contribute on the offensive side of the net, earning him nine games with the team in the latter part of the regular season. According to Daily Faceoff, Fleury would be the team's seventh defenseman. He is preferred over right-handed defenceman Will Borgen. In 36 games last year with the new American West team, the former Buffalo Sabres player scored two goals and recorded six assists.
