The Toronto Maple Leafs have been actively working on their management structure, and they recently hired Brad Treliving as the new General Manager (GM) in Toronto. During his press conference, Treliving emphasized that securing a contract extension for Leafs' superstar Auston Matthews is their top priority.

Matthews Is The Biggest Priority

However, Matthews has indicated that he is unlikely to sign a new contract before July 1st. This presents a significant challenge for Toronto because Matthews' full no-movement clause becomes active on July 1st. If he doesn't re-sign, he would have the freedom to leave Toronto and join any other team without the Leafs receiving any compensation in return.

Matthews Won't Sign Long-term Deal

Hockey insider Elliotte Friedman is of the opinion that Matthews will remain with the Maple Leafs, but he doubts that Matthews will commit to another 8-year deal. Instead, Friedman suggests that Matthews would likely sign a contract ranging from 3 to 6 years at most. This shorter-term agreement would provide Matthews with the opportunity to explore other options and join a team that has a better chance of winning a championship if the Leafs continue to have disappointing playoff runs.
