Former Vancouver Canuck's captain Bo Horvat has a special connection with the #53 jersey he wears. Since being selected in the OHL entry draft, Horvat has worn #53 throughout his whole professional career. Elliotte Friedman asked Horvat why he chose that particular number, and Horvat responded that it was in memory of his buddy and former London Knights teammate Ian Jenkins. Bo Horvat and Jenkins were both selected by the Knights in the 2011 draft, but Jenkins tragically died in a vehicle accident a few weeks later. However now on the Islanders, Casey Cizikas is rocking the number #53. Lou Lamoriello has a rule that no player can wear a number higher than 40 unless you had that number before he was appointed as GM. Which makes absolutely no sense but that's Lou. Maybe Lamoriello made Horvat change his number, or maybe Horvat was willing to start over with his new team. Here it is explained by Gord Miller:

Bo Horvat ended up picking the number #14 for his new tenure with the Islanders.
