The Calgary Flames have been motivated to move Noah Hanifin ahead of the March 8 trade deadline, but the veteran defenseman reportedly isn't making it easy on the front office.

Noah Hanifin holding the Calgary Flames hostage?

While the deals for Toffoli, Lindholm, Zadorov and Tanev all went rather smoothly, the same can't be said for the upcoming move to deal Noah Hanifin.

According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, Hanifin is motivated to ink a long-term deal with whichever team he lands on, and with just a few teams on the list that he'd be willing to extend with, it's made trade discussions a nightmare for Craig Conroy.

DFO Rundown on Hanifin: Frank says the return will be higher than Tanev's but he doesn't know by how much. Says Hanifin's camp is "holding the Flames hostage" because of the talk about where he wants to sign long term.

Names Tampa & Florida as teams Hanifin wants to sign with and speculates Boston, LA and Vegas as other teams he may want to sign with. Stresses those last 3 teams are not confirmed. Says those teams have very few assets to trade.

Hanifin is reportedly interested in signing long term with Tampa Bay or Florida, with LA, Boston and Vegas all possibilities, and with those teams having limited resources, it's making things very hard.

Sure, the team can move him purely as a rental, but the return will be much, much lower for Calgary, so now they have a week to either work out a deal with one of those teams to bring a significant return, or unfortunately accept a smaller deal to move Hanifin as a rental.

Either way, this developing story could define the 2024 NHL trade deadline, and it will be incredibly interesting to watch.
