The Winnipeg Jets have been a hot topic of discussion recently, and its not because of the on-ice product. Today NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman talked about the future of the team.
Bettman Confirms Winnipeg Jets Are Not Relocating
Bettman addressed recent concerns fans have expressed about the team possibly being relocated. Concerns arose when Jets owner Mark Chipman started talking about poor attendance numbers and dropping season ticket renewals. The league commissioner shut these concerns down as he confirmed the league is committed to keeping the Jets in Winnipeg for good. Gary Bettman on the potential of Board of Governors concern regarding the Winnipeg Jets: «If your question is somehow suggesting or implying that at the board level there's a concern about this franchise, the answer is absolutely not.»

Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, who was also at the meeting, reiterated Bettman's stance with words of his own. He noted that the Jets are a great model for success in the league. Bill Daly on the Winnipeg Jets: This is a team that is widely regarded around the league as a model franchise. We wish we had 32 of these.

Bettman Admits Jets Attendance Numbers Need To Improve
All of that being said, Bettman did still comment on the attendance issue. He agreed with Chipman in that the attendance numbers do need to improve, but he expressed confidence in the fanbase, noting that this trend likely will not continue.

He went on to discuss how the team's ownership has invested millions of dollars in the franchise as well as downtown Winnipeg. He used this as reasoning to explain why the team has little incentive to move. Gary Bettman on the Winnipeg Jets: «Ownership has made extraordinary commitments to the Jets, to this arena, to the downtown area, involving 100's of millions of $. I'm not sure why people are now speculating that they are not going to be here.»

With all of this coming out, Jets fans can surely breath a sigh of relief.
